ECM and ECU both mean an electronic control unit. On Caterpillar equipment the engine module is usually called the ECM. Other controllers handle the transmission, the hydraulic system, or the machine functions. They talk to each other, but they are not the same part.
Why the name matters when you order
- An engine ECM will not fix a hydraulic control fault
- Software is tied to the engine serial and the emissions level
- A used module may need a flash and a parameter transfer
- Connectors can look alike across two different boxes
Describe the symptom and read the label on the unit you want to replace. A photo of that label, plus the machine serial, is enough for a useful quote. Guessing from “the computer” is not.
