A CAT excavator pump is expensive enough that “just change it” and “just rebuild it” are both easy to get wrong. The decision depends on what failed and how clean the system still is.
Lean toward replacement or a full rebuild when
- The filter has a heavy metal load
- The shaft or the housing is scored
- Pressure is low on more than one circuit
- The pump has already been opened once
A seal leak with clean oil and good pressure can be a smaller repair. Either way, the tank, the suction screen, and the filters have to be clean before startup. Run the machine and recheck the filter early.
Quote requests should include the model, serial, and a note of metal or no metal in the filter.
