Fuel filters protect the pump and injectors. When they are overdue, the engine loses power under load, surges, or is hard to start after it sits. A filter that is the wrong micron rating can look correct on the outside and still be wrong for the system.
Common problems
- Power loss that improves for a short time after a filter change
- Air in the system from a loose bowl or a bad seal
- Water in the separator that was never drained
- A restriction light or low fuel-pressure code
Change primary and secondary filters as a pair when the manual says so. Prime the system and check for leaks before you send the machine back to work. If filters block early, the tank or the supply lines are dirty. A new filter will not fix that.
Use the engine serial to confirm the element. Several CAT filters share a similar can and a different media.
