The oil filter is a small part with a large job. It has to hold pressure, seal cleanly, and stop the debris the bearings cannot live with. Cutting the interval, or fitting a filter with a weak bypass, undoes the rest of the service.
Mistakes we see
- Using a filter that crosses on size but not on bypass setting
- Forgetting to oil the gasket, then overtightening to stop a leak
- Leaving the old gasket on the housing so the new one never seals
- Stretching the change because the oil “still looks clean”
After a repair that opened the engine, change the filter again at the first short interval. Assembly debris should be caught once, not circulated.
Match the filter to the engine serial. Spin-on filters that look identical can have different valves.
